Throw the Bums Out
In my previous Political Note, I outlined several scenarios for the California Recall. Now, in this the best of all times, in the best of all possible worlds, we have, as usual, arrived at one of the worst case scenarios.
The recall was legally filed, the Courts refuse to interfere, and now the Governor is beset with around 250 contenders seeking his job. On top of that pile is Arnold Schwarzenegger, a supposedly moderate Republican who looks likely to win the election. To date, Arnold has mesmerized the voters by flexing his muscles - robotic and otherwise, but not his brain. I haven't the slightest inkling how Arnold proposes to run the government.
But, worry not, fmr Gov PETE WILSON, is Arnold's buddy and campaign manager. Pete is famous for bringing to life the DEREGULATION which is causing a lot of California's current problems. Did Pete attend the Frankenstein creative management school? Is that why he's in league with the pseudo-robotic Arnold?
I will admit to having changed my position a little. I'm still going to vote against this recall. But, now I'm not so sure about who I prefer. I can see some merit in Adrianna Huffington; after all, she's at least as qualified as Arnold. AND, after enduring years of her X, Michael, maybe Adrianna's a lot more qualified than Arnold who's had it easy with Maria.
I can recommend Lt Gov Cruz Bustamante, too, especially if you like casinos. He's been a big supporter of Indian casinos. Maybe Cruz can make a deal about having more casinos that pay more taxes. We should all note that Nevada has NO INCOME TAX thanks to the gaming industry. Seems like there should be a Monte Carlo in every California town, where Hollywood can supply as many James Bonds as you like.
Get out your roulette wheels, and have fun. Don't worry about it - if Gov Whoever doesn't look right after a few days, we can have another recall.
Round and round it goes, where it stops no one knows ...
Dead Duck Roulette
Since writing about a week ago, everything has changed again.
Only 135 people have been qualified as candidates on the California recall ballot, which is likely to be held on Oct 7, 2003. (There are still pending lawsuits about the election date.) The fraction of likely voters who say they'll vote to recall the Governor keeps going up - now 58%.
Cruz has pulled ahead of Arnold in the recall race. This is a good thing, except for the fact that almost half the California electorate favors one of the other 133 candidates.
Lame Duck Gov Davis quacks he will run the whole race, after which he may be a Peking Duck.
So far, NO ONE has made any significant proposals on how California's problems might be solved.
